Indian weddings abroad; a vibrant mix of cultures

Indian and western culture

No matter where you are born and brought up, you can never let go of your roots or your belonging. Indian weddings consist of bright colors, cultural values, Bollywood music, incorporated with a lot of fun and frolic. There are several events that will take place within a couple of days. Indian weddings abroad consist of a slight cultural fusion of both Indian and western heritage. Rituals and the vast number of events remain Indian, whereas the settings and décor are fused with the place they abode in.

The Ceremonies

Ganesh Pooja
Usually the ceremonies will begin from a prayer service ritual pre-wedding, based at home, where mostly close relatives are only invited to attend.

Mehndi

Followed by a Mehndi event. Where the bride along with all the girls, have their hands designed with intricate henna art, while enjoying music and dancing together.

Sangeet

This event mostly takes up a lot of the guests dressed up in formal vibrant clothes, who are entertained with Bollywood music and dancing. Sangeet nights can be inclusive of mehndi event too but these days people celebrate each separately, to elongate the wedding events.

Wedding day

The last event to take place is the baraat, where the groom comes to the Mandap (a decorated canopy) Wearing traditional wedding clothes on a decorated horse, with his side of guests. The bride is also dressed up in beautiful vibrant bridal clothes, usually a lehnga and short shirt adorned with ornamental jewelry. Upon the groom’s arrival, the wedding rituals begin under the mandap with a Hindu priest reciting and tying the wedding knot between the bride and the groom.

Reception

A party given to the bride and groom after the wedding day usually by the families of the bride and groom.

The Cultural Fusion

The vastness of the Indian wedding events can vary as per personal liking but the rituals remain the same. While abroad, the Indian wedding events are traditional, while being incorporated with western customs too. Like the decoration can be based upon western normality. The mandap décor the seating arrangement and everything in between.
According to theknot.com an average Indian wedding will cost around $29000 with around 140 guests back in India, where as in the US an average Indian wedding costs around $65000 with 500 guests.

The food can also be apart from the typical food served at Indian weddings back at home, consisting of curries and rice served on banana leaves. Here the food will mostly be of western culture but can of course depend upon the choice of the bride and the groom.

The gifts can also be asked to be delivered at home of the couple rather than being brought along.
